ClearSplit

Cookie Policy

The cookies we use — and the ones we don't.

Last updated: 12 April 2026

This policy explains what cookies and similar technologies ClearSplit uses, why, and how you can control them.

We keep our use of cookies minimal. We don’t run adverts, we don’t track you across other websites, and we don’t sell your data. Most of our cookies exist simply to keep you logged in and make the service work.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. It lets the website recognise you between page loads (so you stay logged in, for example). “Similar technologies” means things like local storage, which browsers use for the same purpose.

Cookies we set

Essential cookies (always on)

These cookies are needed for ClearSplit to work. We don’t need your consent for these under UK cookie rules because you’ve specifically asked for the service.

  • clearsplit_session — keeps you logged in. Set when you sign in via magic link, expires after 30 days or when you log out. HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Lax.

Functional cookies and local storage (always on)

These remember small preferences so the app behaves consistently. Also essential to the service you’ve asked for.

  • clearsplit_tracks_banner_dismissed— remembers you’ve dismissed the “three parallel tracks” explainer banner. Stored in your browser’s local storage.

Analytics cookies (optional — off by default)

When we add analytics (PostHog is planned), we’ll use them to understand which features help people and which don’t. These need your consent under UK cookie rules and will be off until you opt in via the cookie banner.

  • PostHog cookies(planned) — session recording (scrubbed of form inputs), feature usage, heatmaps. Used to improve the product, not to advertise to you. We don’t currently set these.

What we don’t use

We don’t use:

  • Advertising cookies
  • Third-party tracking pixels (Google, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok)
  • Cookies that share data with data brokers
  • Fingerprinting or other tracking workarounds

How to manage cookies

In ClearSplit

You saw a cookie banner the first time you visited us. You can change your choice any time here:

Essential cookies can’t be turned off via the banner because the service can’t function without them, but you can always clear them through your browser (see below) — you’ll just be logged out.

In your browser

You can always delete or block cookies at the browser level:

Blocking essential cookies means ClearSplit won’t be able to keep you logged in.

Changes to this policy

If we add new cookies or change how we use existing ones, we’ll update this page. Major changes (like adding analytics) will also trigger a new consent prompt.
